Using YouTube in the classroom

In our current unit on "Who put the Art in Artist", we are researching Vincent van Gogh and his awesome art. Why would I show Vincent van Gogh's pictures in a book to students when they can see and hear his amazing story and paintings on this great YouTube clip:

  1. Students seem to get up in their seats everytime u-tube is mentioned. The trick that I have found, is to play nothing more than one minute, check the lyrics of the songs (turning japanese is not appropriate), and have a back-up plan (an ipod touch worked for me when the electricity was off... "gather around kids, closer, closer," lol.

  2. YouTube is something that is becoming more and more popular amongst web users. I believe it is because it caters to such a wide audience. Furthermore, people take ownership of YouTube - that is by being able to upload their own clips. Why shouldn't students feel a part of this craze? Be it viewing clips to making clips. It provides opportunities for the LM to scaffold the appropriateness and ethical understandings students need to consider. YouTube poses so many opportunities within the learning context.
